A just transformation: everywhere, for everyone

3.6.2024

A week before the European Parliament elections in Poland on 9 June, Liquid Gas Europe has published an eight-point programme manifesto addressed to future MEPs.

The European Union has set itself ambitious climate goals of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Reaching the target implies the achievement of intermediate targets, i.e. a 55% reduction in emissions by 2030, and the recently proposed, but not yet agreed, 90% emission reduction target by 2040.

Liquid gases such as propane, butane and dimethyl ether (DME) are affordable, reliable and clean energy sources, access to which is particularly important in sparsely urbanised areas outside the reach of the natural gas distribution network, and in peripheral areas where, according to European Commission data, the proportion of the population at risk of poverty and energy exclusion is higher than in cities. It is in these areas that the biomass economy has the greatest development potential. In line with the EU's climate neutrality objectives and striving for a just energy transition, the industry is creating a production base for renewable liquefied gases, which is expected to reach 625,000 tonnes of annual generating capacity by 2025.

With the completion of the work and the transition to the implementation phase of the legislative package Fit For 55, the European Union is beginning to pursue the goals beyond 2030. The liquefied gas industry is calling for a shift away from a tunnel vision focused solely on electrification technology, which could hinder European decarbonisation efforts, and to develop a technology-neutral approach to achieve a just energy transition.

The liquefied gas industry, through Liquid Gas Europe, will continue to work on the eight pillars that are essential for a just energy transition. These include:

Pillar I: Renewable energy: Support for the deployment of renewable liquefied gases across the Union

Pillar II: Heating: Priority for a just transition in rural areas

Pillar III: Transport: At the forefront of vehicle decarbonization

Pillar IV: Industry: Versatile and competitive industrial sector

Pillar V: Ecology and Competitiveness: Energy security and sustainability while remaining competitive

Pillar VI: What's up Fit for 55? Continuing on the path to 2050.

Pillar VII: Energy price availability: Affordable energy transition for all

Pillar VIII: Outlying regions and islands: Conditions for the transformation of Europe's outermost regions and islands
