A just transition: everywhere, for everyone

3.6.2024

A week before the June 9 European Parliament elections in Poland, Liquid Gas Europe has published an eight-point program manifesto aimed at future MEPs.

The European Union has set ambitious climate goals of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Reaching the target state implies the achievement of intermediate targets, i.e. a 55% reduction in emissions by 2030, and a recently proposed but not yet agreed upon 90% reduction target by 2040.

Liquefied petroleum gases, such as propane, butane and dimethyl ether (DME), are affordable, reliable and clean sources of energy, access to which is particularly important in sparsely urbanized areas beyond the reach of the natural gas distribution network, and in peripheral areas where, according to European Commission data, the percentage of the population at risk of poverty and energy exclusion is higher than in cities. It is in these areas that the biomass economy has the greatest development potential. In line with the EU's climate-neutrality goals and in pursuit of an equitable energy transition, the industry is building a production base for renewable LPG, which is expected to reach 625,000 tons of annual capacity by 2025.

With the Fit For 55 legislative package completed and moving into the implementation phase, the European Union is beginning to move toward goals beyond 2030. The liquefied petroleum gas industry is calling for a move away from a tunnel vision oriented solely on electrification technology, which could hinder Europe's decarbonization efforts, and for a technology-neutral approach to achieve an equitable energy transition.

The liquefied petroleum gas industry, through Liquid Gas Europe, will continue to work on the eight pillars that are essential for a just energy transition. These include:

‍PillarI: Renewable energy sources: Support for the deployment of renewable liquefied petroleum gases across the Union

Pillar II: Warming: Priority for equitable transformation in rural areas

Pillar III: Transportation: In the vanguard of vehicle decarbonization

Pillar IV: Industry: A versatile and competitive industrial sector.

Pillar V: Ecology and Competitiveness: Energy security and sustainable development with competitiveness

Pillar VI: What after Fit for 55? Continuing on the path to 2050.

Pillar VII: Energy affordability: Energy transition affordable for all

Pillar VIII: Peripheral regions and islands: Determinants of transformation of European peripheral regions and islands
